Phthalates

November 2nd, 2010

You may know that little twig products do not contain phthalates but do you understand why this is so important?  Here is some information on why it is so important to select phthalate-free personal care products for your children.

Phthalates are found in many perfumes, moisturizers and liquid soaps where they serve as a solvent, viscosity controlling agent and emulsifying agent.  They are also found in many plastics. Children are exposed to more phthalates than adults.  Infants and toddlers have the highest risk of exposure.  “Young infants are more vulnerable to the potential adverse effects of phthalates given their increased dosage per unit body surface area, metabolic capabilities and developing endocrine and reproductive systems,” wanrs S. Sathyanarayana in a study published in Pediatrics.

phthalate-free personal careAnother study in the Journal of Pediatrics found that prenatal exposure to phthalates was related to low birth weight in infants.  (Science Daily) Therefore, pregnant women should also avoid products that contain phthalates.  Pick up a bottle of little twig Calming Lavender Bodymilk for a pregnant friend – you will be doing her and her soon-to-be bundle of joy a big favor!

Our goal at little twig is to help educate parents to make healthy decisions for their families. We want to thank you for purchasing phthalate-free little twig products!

The Dangers of Synthetic Fragrances

October 25th, 2010

Are you aware of the dangers of synthetic fragrances?  little twig products are scented with essential oils and not synthetic fragrances.  This helps to keep our products extra mild and gentle for your little ones but it is important to understand the benefits of using essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances.

The skin is extremely porous and the sensitive skin on babies is even more permeable.  Princeton University warns, “The simplest way for chemicals to enter the body is through direct contact with the skin or eyes.”  This means that if you are using a baby wash or lotion with conventional fragrances that the chemicals will be absorbed directly into your child’s bloodstream.  Once chemicals are absorbed into the bloodstream, “the chemical can cause toxic effects on other parts of the body.”

Another important fact to remember is, “skin that is dry or cracked…offers less resistance.”  little twig’s Extra Mild Unscented Bodymilk is the perfect moisturizer because it will hydrate and moisturize without exposing your child to harmful chemicals and toxins.

The website for Organic Consumers states that, “synthetic fragrances may have as many as 200 ingredients.  All they have to say is fragrance.”  little twig has full disclosure on all of our product labels; we want to keep our customers educated about the purity of our product and ingredients.

Problems caused by the chemicals in synthetic fragrance include, “headaches, dizziness, rash, hyper pigmentation, violent coughing, vomiting and skin irritation.”  It is especially important for asthmatics to avoid synthetic scents.

Did you know that indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air?  The Guide to Less Toxic Products informs readers that indoor air, “is often eight to ten times more polluted than outdoor air.”  They also warn that personal care products are a major source of indoor air pollution.  You may want to consider using little twig not only for your children, but yourself as well to lower your contribution to indoor air pollution.

The “Dirt” on Garbage

October 20th, 2010

Yahoo News! just posted a very informative video about garbage.  The average American throws away 4.5 pounds of household waste per day.  That is double the amount of waste that Americans threw out 40 years ago!  Thirty-one percent of that trash is paper which is a real shame because it can take a newspaper a few months to decay in a landfill.  However, more Americans are recycling.  71% of paper is recycled.

It has become easier and more affordable to purchase recycled paper.  Did you know that all little twig gift sets, including Baby Basics, Bath Time Basics, Baby Wash Essentials, and Gentle Care are packaged with post-consumer and recycled materials?  They are already wrapped and you don’t even need a card because they have a To and From label right on the package!

This video also revealed that it takes plastic bags 500-1,000 years to rot and turn into dirt.  Please help do your part and use a tote bag when you head out to the grocery store.  little twig sells a great recycled tote bag, if you do not have one yet do our planet a favor and purchase one today!

Eco Me: Safe & Effective Household Cleaners

October 19th, 2010

We love finding like-minded companies that support their community and the environment and want to tell you about our latest find: Eco Me. This company creates safe and effective household cleaners so you and your family do not have to inhale harmful chemicals and toxins.  Robin Kay Levine, the founder of Eco Me, had concerns that conventional cleaning products were dangerous for your health and wanted to create a “greener” alternative.

Eco Me’s All Purpose Cleaner: Bill is made with water, distilled white vinegar and plant essential oils.  That’s it!  It contains no dyes, parabens, preservatives or surfacants and smells fresh like lemons.

Eco Me has made a commitment to support their community and are also donating to breast cancer this month.

You can find lots of environmental fun facts on the Eco Me website.  Here’s one that is hard to believe, “Americans use 2,500,000 plastic bottles every hour.  Most are thrown away.”  Please teach your children about the importance of recycling so we can improve this scary statistic.

At little twig we value our community and the environment and love hearing about other companies that also incorporate these beliefs.  Please tell us about your favorite companies that share in these ideals.  We would love to hear from you!

Stand Up for Skateparks

October 15th, 2010

little twig is proud to support Tony Hawk’s Stand Up for Skateparks in Beverly Hills this Sunday, October 17.  The mission of Stand Up for Skateparks is to, “create free quality skateparks for at-risk youth.”  The organization is currently trying to raise funding to build a skate park in Long Beach, CA where there is a high concentration of children and teenagers.  Tony Hawk wants to create a place for the youth to be, “safe, active and engaged.”  We understand how important it is to support the community and have provided a gift basket with your favorite organic baby bath products to be raffled off.  It should be an exciting event, Tony Hawk will be performing some of his signature moves and there will be a live concert.  Stand Up for Skateparks will also be hosting an event in Las Vegas on Saturday, November 6, 2010, please visit their website for more information.

Simple Homemade Halloween Costumes for Kids

September 21st, 2010

Bunny Costume by Daisy A.

Start with cozy pajamas and sew on a felt circle for the belly.  You can really dress it up with matching globes and felt ears.  The best part is that after Halloween you can simply remove the felt belly – the pajamas can still be worn throughout the chilly winter season!

Lawyer and Mayor Costume by Ginger S.

All you need to do is put your little boy in a suit!  You can use an old briefcase as a trick-or-treating candy bag.

The Peanuts Gang Costume by Holli S. & Amy C

Put your little one in a white sweat suit with black felt spots and dog-ears for Snoopy.  Charlie Brown is as simple as a yellow T-shirt with the zigzag stripe and black shorts.  All you need for Peppermint Patty are brown shorts and green button up shirt.

Fairy Costume by Cheryl C.

Pull out your little girl’s ballet tutu and make a pair of wings.  You can add a silver star to the top of a wooden spoon for a wand and add streams and ribbons to her hair…too cute!

Synchronized Swimming Team Costume by Betsy G.

If you are taking several children trick-or-treating you can put them all in bathing suits and make a synchronized swimming team.  When it gets chilly they can wrap towels around their waists and put on windbreakers.  Swim caps and goggles make for great accessories.  If you bring a whistle you can go as their coach!

Dice Costume by Andrea T.

Grab a big square box, paint it white and then paint black dots on each side.  Cut holes for arms and head and voila!

We want to thank all our little twig fans for their suggestions on great Halloween costumes.  When you make your child a costume from things you have around the house you are not only saving a few dollars, you are also helping the environment by reducing your purchases and reusing things you already own!
